What is GME?

Marine engineers run and maintain everything that keeps a ship moving: main engines, generators, boilers, pumps and purifiers. GME takes the engineering you already know from your degree and trains you for the engine room of a ship.

The course is offered by DG Shipping approved institutes, and many shipping companies sponsor GME cadets. Pre-sea training lasts about a year, depending on the institute, and is followed by shipboard training as a trainee marine engineer.

Usually quantitative aptitude, mechanical engineering knowledge, English and reasoning.

  3. Interview

A technical interview on core mechanical subjects, along with an HR round.

  4. Medical

A full medical by a DGS approved doctor.

  5. Pre-sea training

About a year of workshop practice, marine engineering theory and safety training.

  6. Ship and MEO Class IV

Questions about GME

Can I join GME with a degree in another branch?

Most institutes accept only B.E. or B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, and some also accept Naval Architecture or Mechanical-stream degrees. Electrical, civil and other branches are usually not accepted for GME.

Is there an age limit for GME?

Usually 28 years on the day the course starts, with relaxation for SC/ST, OBC and women candidates at many institutes.

What do I get at the end of GME?

After pre-sea and shipboard training you can sit for the DG Shipping MEO Class IV exam. Passing it lets you sail as a Fourth Engineer.
