Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions students and parents ask us most about IMU CET, sponsorship, GP Rating, GME and the medical.

IMU CET

What is IMU CET?

The Common Entrance Test of the Indian Maritime University. It is used for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate maritime programmes, including B.Sc Nautical Science, DNS and B.Tech Marine Engineering, at IMU campuses and affiliated institutes.

What is the IMU CET exam pattern?

It is a three-hour computer-based test with 200 multiple choice questions: Maths 50, Physics 50, English 40, Chemistry 20, General Knowledge 20 and General Aptitude 20. Each correct answer earns 1 mark and each wrong answer loses 0.25.

Who is eligible for IMU CET?

For DNS and B.Sc Nautical Science you need Class 12 with at least 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Maths, and at least 50% in English in Class 10 or 12. Age limits are set for each programme, so check the current IMU notification.

When is IMU CET held?

Usually in May or June, with registration opening a few months earlier. We share the dates with our students as soon as IMU announces them. See IMU CET coaching.

Sponsorship

What is company sponsorship?

A shipping company selects you as its cadet before training starts and promises you a berth on its ships for your cadet sea time. That sea time is required before you can sit for the Second Mate exam. See DNS sponsorship and BNS sponsorship.

What does a sponsorship test include?

Usually an online test in English, maths, physics and reasoning, often with a psychometric section, followed by an interview and a medical.

Do I need IMU CET as well as sponsorship?

Yes. For DNS and B.Sc Nautical Science at IMU-affiliated institutes, you must qualify IMU CET as well as the company selection.

GP Rating

Can I join GP Rating after Class 10?

Yes. Most institutes accept Class 10 or 12 with 40% overall and 40% in English, for candidates aged 17½ to 25. See the GP Rating page for details.

Can a GP Rating become an officer?

Yes. With enough sea time and further exams, ratings can move up to officer rank.

GME

Who can do GME?

Graduates with a B.E. or B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering (some institutes also accept Naval Architecture) with at least 50% in the final year, usually up to 28 years old. See the GME page.

What rank do I get after GME?

After training you can sit for the MEO Class IV exam. Passing it lets you sail as a Fourth Engineer.

Medical and eyesight

What eyesight do I need?

Deck officers (DNS and B.Sc Nautical Science) need 6/6 vision in each eye without glasses and normal colour vision. Engine officers and ratings have their own standards set by DG Shipping. We suggest an eye check before you start preparing.

Where do I get the medical done?

The pre-sea medical must be done by a doctor approved by the Directorate General of Shipping. Companies and institutes may also send you to their own approved doctors.

Can girls join the Merchant Navy?

Yes. Women sail as deck and engine officers and ratings, and many institutes and companies actively encourage women cadets. Some institutes also offer fee relaxations for women.
